The Biodex™ unweighing system allows for the partial un-weighting of the individual which can be particularly advantageous to clients with incomplete spinal cord injuries. The Biodex™ unweighing system can reduce the weight on an individuals legs by up to 40%; making the effort of stepping, substantially easier; allowing the individual to access normal movement patterns
Current research shows that the ability to step and walk is held within neural circuits located within the spinal cord. Clusters of cells within the spinal cord of other mammals and primates have been conclusively shown to produce normal stepping movements. It is acknowledged that the human nervous system is significantly more complex than those of other mammals. However, eminent research believes that similar circuitry exists within the human spinal cord. The Biodex™ system is believed to allow these circuits to be facilitated by unloading the weight of the legs and access sensory information into the spinal cord. The Biodex™ can be used with or without a treadmill.
The Biodex™ system can also be used with clients with other neurological conditions such as stroke; especially where the client poses a manual handling risk.
Biodex™ system provides the following advantages:
A safe environment for patients and therapists; reducing the dependencies on staff
Partial weight-bearing training as a tool for promoting normal walking patterns including, balance, step, symmetry, stride length and cadence
