Dr Michelle Smalley - Neuropsychologist

Dr Michelle Smalley is Deputy Head of Neuropsychology Services at the University Hospital of Wales and has worked within the field of clinical and neuropsychology for over ten years. Michelle is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and an affiliate member of the Division of Neuropsychology. She is also a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and registered with the Health Professions Council.
Michelle graduated from the University of Keele in 2000 with a BSc (Dual Hons) in Neuroscience & Psychology. She gained her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Southampton in 2005 and subsequently completed post-doctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Glasgow in 2008.
Following her doctorate, in 2005, Michelle took up post at the Regional Neurosciences Centre, University Hospital of Wales as a Specialist/Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist in MS and neuroinflammaotry conditions providing neuropsychological assessment, rehabilitation, consultation and psychological therapy to outpatients and inpatients with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions. In 2009, Michelle was promoted to Lead Clinical Psychologist in Neurosurgery. Here she provides behavioural and cognitive assessments, alongside the MDT, for inpatients suffering from a range of traumatic and acquired brain injuries and outpatient clinics to support patients and their relatives once they have returned to the community. She also supervises systemic family support clinics for relatives of inpatients and runs reflective practice groups for the nursing staff.
Michelle is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University and has published papers and presented to conferences on a range of subjects from adult mental health to neurosurgical presentations.
