During a career in nursing Terry developed an interest in the psychological impact of physical health difficulties on people, and their families, which ultimately led to her studying for a BSc Hons in Psychology at the University of Warwick (graduated 1994). As a graduate, and maintaining her joint interest in both the physical and psychological aspects of illness, Terry worked in a Neuropsychology Service (Royal Midland Counties Rehabilitation Hospital, Leamington Spa) and contributed to neuropsychological assessments and the provision of psychological therapy for individuals, and their families, to assist with their adjustments following brain injury.
Terry then went on to train as a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Birmingham and qualified in 1997. Between 1997 and 2000 Terry worked in the Clinical Health Psychology service at Warwick Hospital, assisting individuals and their families come to terms with, and adjust to, a variety of physical health challenges.
Since 2000 Terry has worked in the Primary Care Psychology and Families Service in South Birmingham, where she works with individuals and families of all ages, to help them to meet the challenges posed by both physical and mental health difficulties. Her interest in working with families led to Terry training as a Family Therapist and she qualified as a Systemic Family Therapist in 2003.
Having developed considerable expertise in her field Terry contributes to the teaching of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral training course at Birmingham University, as well as to a Masters in Oncology run jointly by the University of Birmingham and the Cancer Studies Department at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. She also contributes to the research teaching of the Masters in Systemic therapy run jointly by The Children's Hospital at Parkview Clinic and The University of Birmingham. Terry supervises qualified, and trainee, clinical psychologists working in both physical and mental health settings.
